ORIGINAL ART: HORSES FROM LASCAUX CAVES, FRANCE – 24,000 B.C.E.

The horse is the most frequently seen animal in all of Europe’s ancient caves. Current thought is that they served as part of the spiritual life and practice of these ancient peoples.  They are often shown in movement and with a round belly that may indicate pregnancy and thus a metaphoric renewal of life and resources.

Depending on the cave, the horse is nearly always found paired with either the bison or aurochs, the two next-most frequent animals. Because of this, the horse and aurochs, or the horse and bison, are now thought to symbolize the male/female, or yin/yang elements of life that ensure balance and the continuation of the cycle of life. The horse may have been a constellation and part of a mythic hero story.
