ORIGINAL ART:  AUROCHS FROM LASCAUX CAVES, FRANCE – 26,000 B.C.E.

Nearly as massive as an elephant, the aurochs is a hefty ancestor of modern cattle. It was the Minotaur of ancient Greece. It is one of the most frequent images seen in the ancient caves of France, almost always paired with the horse. Together they may have been seen as the dual forces of creation and re-creation, the yin and yang, male and female needed for the balance of the world and the continuation of the cycle of life.

A few aurochs survived into the 17th century in Poland on the king’s estate. Despite their wild looks and reputation, they may have been domesticated as early as the days of the cave paintings. There is a project in Europe to breed them back into existence.

The aurochs may have represented the constellation Taurus for at least some peoples. If, as some think, the beginnings of astrology reach this far back in time, it could have represented the sign of the Bull.
