ORIGINAL ART: CAVE LIONS FROM CHAUVET CAVES, FRANCE – 34,000 B.C.E.
Cave lions are one of more rare images to be seen in the caves of Europe, which seems strange since the caves themselves had to have been homes for these marvelous but dangerous beasts.
When Chauvet Caves was recently discovered in 1994, a treasure trove of cave lion images came to light. They are depicted in several place in the caves, but the most amazing is the mural shown above. Not only are the lions shown in great detail and graceful form, but the entire pride of lions forms a composition that any artist would be praised for arranging.
