ORIGINAL ART: RHINO FROM CHAUVET, FRANCE – 36,000 B.C.E.

 

The wooly rhino roamed over all of central Europe as well as the American continent. It became extinct somewhere around 12,000 BCE, long after much of the cave art was created. Its image is found in a number of caves, most remarkably those of Chauvet and Rouffignac.

As with many other cave images, those of the wooly rhino often show an amazing sense of motion, as in the example shown above where the bulls seem to be in the middle of a fight. These challenges between males usually happened during mating season to win the favors of the females. This reinforces the idea that much cave art had to do with encouraging the renewal of each of earth’s species and of the yearly rebirth of life of all kinds.
